Why Hollow Conductors Are Used in High-Frequency Circuits

Advantages of Hollow Conductors in High-Frequency Signal Transmission
High-frequency signals are characterized by high frequencies, short wavelengths, and the capability for long-distance transmission. Using conventional solid (filled) cables for such transmission lines presents several drawbacks. For instance, the proximity of conductors within these cables creates parasitic capacitance and inductance, which lead to significant crosstalk and signal attenuation. Furthermore, the inherent cable losses and magnetic flux linkage (flux trapping) in solid cables degrade signal transmission quality.

Hollow conductors feature a large outer diameter but a small actual cross-sectional area; this design reduces magnetic flux linkage and transmission losses, while significantly improving the uniformity of inductance and impedance. Moreover, because solid cables require a dielectric material-which is typically fixed in place-the dielectric imposes limitations on signal transmission. Hollow conductors, by contrast, contain no dielectric material, which reduces inductance and increases bandwidth. This allows for signal transmission across a broader frequency range. Additionally, hollow conductors can make direct contact with circuit boards, which helps to further minimize noise in the transmission line.

Fabrication and Application of Hollow Conductors
Hollow conductors are generally made of copper or aluminum and can be manufactured using various processes to meet specific requirements. They are frequently employed in applications with high-frequency demands, such as feed lines for high-frequency power amplifiers or in the interconnections for field-effect transistors (FETs).

Considerations for Using Hollow Conductors in High-Frequency Circuits
When utilizing hollow conductors, it is important to note that the required diameter varies depending on the operating frequency range of the circuit. Therefore, one must accurately estimate and select the appropriate diameter for the specific frequency band in question.

Additionally, during the fabrication of hollow conductors-particularly those with larger diameters-care must be taken to avoid quality defects or issues related to current overload. Consequently, it is essential to implement rigorous process control and utilize high-quality raw materials when manufacturing these components.
