Methods For Installing Catenary Wires

The installation of catenary wires is typically carried out using a specialized stringing train-a set of rail-mounted vehicles-during scheduled track-occupancy windows. In modern construction, auxiliary equipment, such as anti-topple ladder cars designed for ballastless track, is often employed to enhance operational safety and installation precision. [7] In my country, a "zero-tension" (or low-tension) stringing method is commonly used. This process requires coordination between teams on the train and on the ground: first, the wire is unspooled freely; subsequently, ground crews perform the tensioning and anchoring. Generally, installing the catenary wire for a single anchor section requires approximately 1.5 hours of track-occupancy time (encompassing both the installation work and the movement of the stringing train).
When using stringing equipment imported from Japan, "tension-stringing" can be performed, with tension typically maintained between 1.5 and 3.0 kN. This system also supports "over-tensioning" (pre-stretching) up to a maximum of 30 kN. Equipped with rotating, elevating work platforms, the system facilitates both the initial and final anchoring processes. This approach significantly reduces the need for ground personnel, boosts efficiency by approximately 30%, and greatly enhances safety and reliability.
The installation method is closely linked to the suspension configuration of the catenary wire. When an "overhead" (top-mounted) suspension system is used, a semi-automated stringing process can be implemented, which substantially lowers labor intensity, improves work efficiency, and shortens the required track-occupancy time. Conversely, when an "underslung" (bottom-mounted) suspension system is used, the design and installation configuration of the suspension components significantly influence the complexity of the stringing process. For instance, utilizing traditional suspension components-such as hook-head saddles or suspension pulleys-necessitates a highly complex installation procedure. However, the adoption of modernized components (redesigned saddles) allows for a significantly simplified stringing process.
